Cambodia-Brunei Agree to Establish Memorandum of Understanding

PHNOM PENH: Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Brunei Darussalam's second foreign minister, Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof, have agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding between two countries' respective governments on bilateral consultations. This agreement was made during a virtual meeting between the Foreign Ministers on Wednesday.

The two sides hailed the 30 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries, and the Bruneian side expressed that Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah also wishes to pay a visit to Cambodia before the ASEAN Summit being held in November. The Bruneian Minister of Foreign Affairs also invited the Minister Prak Sokhonn to come and visit Brunei at an appropriate time.

In addition to discussing bilateral relations and agreeing to sign a memorandum of understanding between the two countries, the foreign ministers also discussed issues related to the ASEAN region, especially Myanmar.

In a statement issued on Wednesday night, the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that "Both the Ministers had similar views on the complexity of the situation in Myanmar which needs to be addressed through a step-by-step approach. The two Ministers concurred that ASEAN should continue to persevere in engendering an inclusive process of dialogue, which should be Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned, to end violence, prevent worsening humanitarian conditions and achieve durable peace. They shared commitment to work together, along with other ASEAN colleagues, to expedite progress on the implementation of Five-point Consensus and to further strengthen the centrality and unity of ASEAN.”

Brunei and Cambodia first established diplomatic relations in 1992, with each countries’ respective embassies also cooperating in trade, education and defense.
